I'm selling a 1985 Mercedes 380sl convertible.
I believe the car does have 27,900 miles, according to the odometer. However, there was an entry error listed on the CarFax in 1998, showing a jump from 21,000 to 117,000 in one year. Possibly in 2006 it began a restoration, and at that time Florida no longer required mileage to be reported.
Its current condition is as a modertate-to-light restoration project. It seems to have begun a paint and interior restoration, possibly in either 2006 or 2014.
Most important, it's a Florida car with a solid, rust-free body and undercarriage. The white paint does look good enough, but there are areas of overspray. The body could come to life with a thorough buffing. There is some tape residue on the body from a tarp that was over the cabin.
Mechanically, it does turn over, but it will probably need the typical refreshing of a car that's been sitting for 5-6 years or possibly longer. I was told it does fire with starting fluid.
The interior is where the work is needed. All of the parts seem to be there, but the most recent owner took apart the dashboard, door panels, and other pieces.
However, this presents a great opportunity -- the interior could be restored in blue, which would go better with the white exterior. And the seats could be finished in a soft leather, and not the hard MB-Tex.
There is a soft top of unknown condition. But again, blue would look better.
The chrome is in excellent condition.
It has the rare optional rear seat. The windshield is missing.
My understanding of the history is that it was owned by an older woman who passed it down to her son who started the restoration.
Prices for SLs have been rising, and this is a good opportunity to acquire one for a low price.
I believe once restored, it could be presented as a 27,900 mile R107, and that would make it a valuable collectible.
